Fred Bellefeuille Gookooko’oog is a member or E’dbendaazijig of Nipissing First Nation and has dedicated his practice to First Nations issues. He works as a barrister and solicitor, legal director and counsel for the Anishinabek Nation. A graduate of Nipissing University B.A. (Hons), Mr. Bellefeuille received his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University with a focus on Aboriginal Lands, Resources and Rights. He is the recipient of several academic awards from Osgoode Hall Law School and Nipissing University. He was recently awarded the Anishinabek Nation Lifetime Achievement award for his work in law.
He has significant experience in a wide range of practice areas, including First Nation governance elections and appeals, governmental negotiations, land and resource law, land claims, contract law, legislative drafting (First Nation constitutions, laws, codes and bylaws), legislative analysis and advocacy. He has experience with the Ontario Provincial Court, Supreme Court of Ontario and appellant court levels. He has spoken at conferences, workshops and public forums on topics such as treaties and their interpretation, Aboriginal self-government, law and First Nations rights. He is also a member of the Law Society of Ontario.
